UK Import - EV Hub Docs

How post-Brexit rules change importing a Chinese EV into the United Kingdom, including UK duty, VAT, IVA approval, and the absence of EU countervailing duty.

UK Import Guide

The United Kingdom left the EU customs union, which changes the picture for Chinese EV imports in one important way: the EU’s countervailing duty does not apply in the UK. That makes the UK a meaningfully cheaper destination than the EU for the same vehicle — at least on the tax side.

The UK cost stack

  • Import duty: 10% of CIF value (the UK maintains a 10% MFN rate on Chinese EVs).
  • Countervailing duty: none at the time of writing.
  • VAT: 20%.

Because there is no countervailing duty, the compounding is simpler: standard duty on CIF, then VAT on the duty-inclusive total.

A worked example: BYD Seal

The same BYD Seal at $24,690 base price lands quite differently in the UK than in Germany:

Line itemAmount (USD)
Base price$24,690
Standard duty (10%)$2,469
Countervailing duty$0
VAT (20%)$5,432
RoRo freight$2,000
Customs clearance$350
Certification (IVA)$3,000
Registration$400
Inland transport$500
Total landed$38,841

That’s a +57.3% premium — roughly 22 percentage points cheaper than the equivalent German figure, driven almost entirely by the absence of the countervailing duty.

UK-specific approval: IVA

The UK has its own vehicle approval regime, the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) scheme, administered by the DVSA. Categories relevant to EV imports:

  • Basic IVA — for passenger cars, the most common route for single imports.
  • Mutual recognition — a vehicle already EU type-approved may qualify for a simplified route, though this depends on the specific approval status.

Like the EU, a China-market EV will likely need adaptations (lighting, speedometer in mph, right-hand-drive considerations) before passing IVA. Budget $1,500–$4,000 and 2–5 weeks.

Practical notes

  • VAT recoverability: as in the EU, VAT is recoverable for VAT-registered businesses.
  • Currency: the UK market prices in GBP, so factor in USD/GBP movement over the multi-month import window.
  • No CV duty today, but monitor policy: trade policy can change; verify current rates at the time of import.
